Europe

English churches and congregations have been established in continental Europe since before the Reformation, with the Diocese of Gibraltar being formed in 1842. For nearly 125 years from 1862 the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG, later USPG) sent chaplains.

The current structure of the Diocese in Europe was created in 1980. Geographically it is the largest diocese of the Church of England and the Anglican Communion, spread across forty-two countries on three continents.

The diocese is led by Diocesan Bishop Rt Revd Dr Robert Innes and Suffragan Bishop Rt Revd Dr David Hamid and is a network of diverse Christian communities serving Anglicans and other English-speaking Christians. Ecumenical partnerships with Catholic, Orthodox and Protestants form an important part of diocesan life.

The continent of Europe has two other full member churches of the Anglican Communion: the Spanish Episcopal Reformed Church and the Lusitanian Church (Portugal), as well as the Convocation of Episcopal Churches in Europe - a jurisdiction of The Episcopal Church in the United States.

Since 2015 USPG has worked with the Diocese in Europe on a Church response to refugees and is a member of the Diocesan Mission and Public Affairs Unit.
