USPG marks Myanmar coup anniversary

First published on: 1st February 2022

On 1 February 2021, the government of Myanmar was overthrown by the country’s military. One year on, UN Human Rights chief Michelle Bachelet has called the ongoing violence in the country a 'civil war' between the Myamar military and the People's Defence Force - a broad group of citizens fighting against them.

Almost 1,500 people have been killed and over 11,000 political prisoners arrested since the start of the coup. Over 320,000 people have been forced to move from their homes and communities by military rule. The Covid-19 pandemic has caused further disruption to those displaced by the regime.

USPG urges supporters to pray for the people of Myanmar as they continue to live under a military junta.

The Rev’d Davidson Solanki, Regional Manager for Asia and the Middle East, said, ‘We ask for your prayers for the nation of Myanmar as they suffer through hardship, violence and instability. We thank God for the Church of the Province of Myanmar as they continue to share their love and generosity, even during this difficult time.’

Join us in praying for Myanmar using the words below:

Living and loving God,

Along with the people of Myanmar

We cry out to you for mercy;

For those who are grieving; for those who are struggling and for those who are in despair;

May your love reign in the hearts and minds of all and may your peace prevail.

This we ask in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ,

Amen
