USPG has a relationship with Cyprus through its long and cherished partnership with the Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East.

From 8 – 10 February 2021, USPG Regional Manager for Asia and the Middle East, Rev’d Davidson Solanki, attended the Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf’s Synod. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the event was held entirely online.

Synod members heard from the Most Rev’d Michael Lewis, Archbishop of the Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf, who spoke about God’s gift of community. Members then discussed the meaning of community, and how Covid-19 has pushed churches to be more flexible and innovative in their approach to community.

Members of Synod heard from the Rt Rev’d Jackie Searle, Bishop of the Diocese of Crediton, who discussed how Covid-19 affected her local area, and also from representatives of the Diocese of Thika in Kenya, who provided reflections on their ministry during the pandemic. This presentation focused on the increasing use of technology in the church and the importance of pastoral care during Covid-19.

Rev’d Davidson Solanki said “I have been greatly inspired by this Synod. The Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf ran proceedings very well over Zoom. Despite financial challenges brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Diocese has remained faithful to its vocation, continuing to serve the vulnerable”.
