Appointment of Dame Sarah Mullally to Archbishop of Canterbury
USPG warmly congratulates Dame Sarah Mullally on her appointment to the office of the Archbishop of Canterbury, making history as the first woman to ever serve as the spiritual leader to Anglicans worldwide. Sarah’s experience and knowledge gained from her background in the NHS and as a senior civil servant will help bring renewed wisdom and unity to the Communion, and call the Church to faithful witness in today’s rapidly changing world.
The Revd Canon Dr Duncan Dormor, General Secretary of USPG, said:
We rejoice with the whole Church at Dame Sarah Mullally’s ordination and give thanks for the Archbishop’s leadership, faith, and vision. Her ministry comes at a time of challenge and opportunity, and we are excited to journey with her as partners in mission.

By virtue of her role, Sarah also becomes the new President of USPG. We look forward to working together to continue our mission to partner with churches worldwide in God’s mission to enliven faith, strengthen relationships, unlock potential, and champion justice.
The Revd Canon Dr Peniel Rajkumar, Global Theologian and Director of Global Mission at USPG, added:
“The Archbishop’s role at the heart of the Anglican Communion is vital in nurturing bonds of fellowship and solidarity across diverse contexts. At USPG we look forward to working with Sarah as we continue to seek to live out God’s mission in the world together.”
