USPG & Zimbabwe
The Church of the Province of Central Africa is part of the Anglican Communion, and includes 15 dioceses in Botswana, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe. USPG is a long-term partner of the Anglican Church in Zimbabwe, particularly in supporting initiatives to reduce HIV stigma and discrimination.
HIV and AIDS remain a significant public health issue in Zimbabwe, where stigma and discrimination against those living with HIV limit access to crucial services. In response, the Anglican Church in Zimbabwe launched a programme to combat this, and welcome people who have disclosed their status. By offering them practical support, the aim is to restore the dignity that God first gave.
The programme was launched in four of Zimbabwe’s five Anglican dioceses: Central Zimbabwe, Harare, Masvingo and Matabeleland. It uses an approach endorsed by the World Health Organisation to educate the public about HIV/AIDS through media, art, advocacy, and campaigns. Churches distribute materials, organise sporting events, and commemorate World AIDS Day while lobbying for policy changes.
Waste Smart, We Care
This is a climate action campaign between three partner provinces: the Church of the Province of Central Africa (Malawi, Zimbabwe & Zambia), Anglican Church of Indian Ocean (Mauritius, Madagascar and Seychelles) and the Anglican Church of Tanzania. The goal is for churches and communities in 47 dioceses to increase their understanding of climate issues, adopt sustainable waste practices, and actively engage in climate initiatives. The campaign highlights the Church’s commitment to environmental stewardship and community involvement in climate solutions.
HIV Stigma Reduction
The Anglican Council of Zimbabwe, under the Church of the Province of Central Africa, works to reduce HIV stigma and discrimination while empowering people living with HIV to access services and advocate for their rights. Through education, community engagement, and faith-based support, the programme fosters inclusion and dignity, contributing to Zimbabwe’s progress towards the UNAIDS 90‑90‑90 targets and a significant reduction in new infections. It reflects the Church’s commitment to compassion, ensuring people living with HIV are supported, valued, and embraced with hope.
