USPG & Tanzania

The Anglican Church of Tanzania is a province of the Anglican Communion based in Dodoma and consists of 28 dioceses (27 on the Tanzanian mainland, and 1 on Zanzibar). USPG supports its vision is to be a sustainable Church working together effectively for the growth of God’s Kingdom.

USPG’s partnership with the Anglican Church of Tanzania has developed over more than a century, beginning with the work of UMCA missionaries in the 1860s and strengthened further after the establishment of the Anglican Church of Tanzania as an independent province in 1979. Throughout the decades, the Church has expanded its healthcare services, invested in the formation of new leaders and community development across its 28 dioceses. Today, the enduring partnership with USPG continues to grow, grounded in a shared commitment to strengthening healthcare, safeguarding mothers and children from HIV, economic resilience and climate justice.

Preventing Mother to Child Transmission of HIV

In the Muheza district of Tanzania, maternal and child health is severely impacted by a high prevalence of HIV, with many pregnant women infected, leading to significant risks of mother-to-child transmission. The Anglican Church of Tanzania is responding by strengthening the capacity of local health programs and enhancing community health services, focusing on prevention strategies for HIV transmission. This includes educational initiatives to raise awareness, improving access to healthcare for pregnant women, and mobilizing community support to ultimately reduce maternal deaths and improve health outcomes for women and children in the region.

Healthcare

St. Luke’s Mission Hospital, operated by the South West Tanganyika Diocese and supported by USPG since the 1940s, exemplifies programmatic healthcare work in Tanzania. Alongside it, St. Anne’s Hospital – originating from the first Anglican missionaries in 1902 – provides essential medical services to approximately 150,000 people in the Nyasa District and operates a dispensary. Additionally, the Kwamkkono Disabled Children’s Centre, established in 1962, offers housing, education, and rehabilitation for children with physical disabilities. Together, these centres illustrate the Church’s long-standing commitment to health and social support in the region.

Mji Mwema Micro-city Project

Thanks to a generous legacy from former missionary Ms Eira Lloyd and local fundraising efforts, the Diocese of South West Tanganyika have opened a new hostel and retail centre. The rental spaces will generate long-term income for the diocese to benefit educational work, care for orphans and many women and young people across the region.
