USPG & Mozambique & Angola
The origins of the Anglican Church in Mozambique date back to the 19th century when SPG missionaries came from South Africa and Universities’ Mission to Central Africa had missionaries working in the north. The Church in Angola’s origins are much more recent.
In 2021, a new Portuguese-speaking province was approved for Southern Africa, bringing together the Anglican Church of Mozambique and Angola. This new province, called the Igreja Anglicana de Moçambique e Angola (IAMA), became the newest member of the worldwide Anglican Communion.
USPG is supporting IAMA by helping develop leadership, establishing a provincial office, and launching a tailoring programme to produce liturgical vestments and other uniforms, strengthening local skills and the sustainability of the province.
Serving the Lord with Dignity
This project was born out of a simple but important need: to make sure clergy, lay ministers, and altar servers in two dioceses of the Anglican Church in Mozambique have the high-quality vestments they need to serve with dignity. The new small business produces these vestments locally, helping the Church to become more sustainable. The vision is for the centres to also make other items like uniforms for the Mothers’ Union and local schools thereby generating income to support staff, cover operating costs, and ensure the work continues for years to come.
