USPG & Malawi
The Church of the Province of Central Africa is part of the Anglican Communion, and includes 15 dioceses in Botswana, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe. USPG is a long-term partner of the Anglican Church in Malawi, providing support for leadership training, as well as healthcare and community integrated programmes.
Healthcare
In Malawi, several mission hospitals run by the Anglican Church provide vital healthcare services, especially in rural regions, USPG provides vital funding for this work. The hospitals include St Peter’s, St Luke’s, St Martin’s and St Anne’s on the shores of Lake Malawi. The hospitals face significant challenges due to the lack of healthcare infrastructure in their areas. For example, St Peter’s on Likoma Island compensates for the absence of a government district hospital by offering free healthcare services. St Luke’s operates with eight health centres, providing a wide range of services, including maternity, HIV/AIDS care, and anti-malarial treatment.
Gender Justice
In Malawi, 83% of the population lives in rural areas, where girls face significant challenges in education despite free primary schooling. High dropout rates for girls are because of early marriages, teenage pregnancies, poor policy enforcement, and a lack of gender-sensitive environments. Through the Anglican Church, USPG support an advocacy campaign aiming to improve retention and transition rates for 2000 girls and increase knowledge on sexual and reproductive health for 2000 girls and 500 boys. This campaign also improves retention and transition rates for girls in education and increases knowledge on sexual and reproductive health and rights.
Waste Smart, We Care
This is a climate action campaign between three partner provinces: the Church of the Province of Central Africa (Malawi, Zimbabwe & Zambia), Anglican Church of Indian Ocean (Mauritius, Madagascar and Seychelles) and the Anglican Church of Tanzania. The goal is for churches and communities in 47 dioceses to increase their understanding of climate issues, adopt sustainable waste practices, and actively engage in climate initiatives. The campaign highlights the Church’s commitment to environmental stewardship and community involvement in climate solutions.
