USPG & Jamaica

Jamaica is an island in the Caribbean Sean neighboured by Haiti to the east and Cuba to the north. The first missionaries from the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (SPG) to be sent to the Caribbean arrived in the Windward Islands in 1712. SPG missionaries arrived in the Bahamas in 1733. Today, USPG has a long and cherished relationship with the Church in the Province of the West Indies, which covers Barbados, Belize, Guyana, Jamaica, the Bahamas, the North-Eastern Caribbean and Aruba, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Windward Islands.

2024 marked 200 years since the foundation of the Dioceses of Jamaica and Barbados. Both Dioceses organised a number of events to mark and commemorate their foundation.

Research & Learning

The Revd Garfield Campbell, a priest within the Church of the Province of the West Indies, is pursuing a PhD at the University of Leeds (2022-2025) on the SPG and Anglicanism’s role in Jamaica from 1825-1860, focusing on the agency of the enslaved during emancipation. The research, part of a partnership with USPG, explores historical connections to transatlantic slavery.
