USPG & Hungary
The Diocese in Europe stretches from Norway to Morocco and Portugal to Russia which makes it the largest diocese in the Church of England in terms of geography. It also encompasses incredible diversity and is compelled to promote a sense of belonging together ensuring that all people are welcome.
USPG works in close collaboration with the Diocese in Europe giving particular focus to projects that support the settlement of refugees and asylum-seekers. Here’s an insight into the refugee-centred projects that USPG currently supports in Hungary, a country that has welcomed many Ukrainians since the onset of war.
Ukrainian Space
Founded by a member of Saint Margaret’s Anglican Church in Budapest, this programme was a first response to the war in neighbouring Ukraine. Over time, it has grown to provide educational and social support for Ukrainian refugee families, focusing on their specific needs. Key initiatives include school lessons aligned with the Ukrainian curriculum, a food program offering lunches for staff and children, English language lessons for adults, and social support through psychological meetings, group trips, and community-building events. These efforts help foster a sense of belonging and empowerment for refugees in Budapest.
