USPG & Hong Kong

USPG’s relationship with Hong Kong began in 1842 and continues through its partnership with the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui (HKSKH). This Province is represented on the Council of the Church of East Asia, as well as on USPG’s Asia Theological Accompaniment Programme which brings together leaders from Asian theological institutions to address challenges like economic recovery, contextual theology, and external political pressures. This initiative promotes collaboration, inclusive leadership, and resilience in theological education across Asia.

The Province of Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui (HKSKH) was established in 1998. It comprises three dioceses: Hong Kong Island, Eastern Kowloon and Western Kowloon, and the missionary area of Macau. Education and social welfare remain distinctive features of the church’s mission, as does its status as a pioneer of women’s ordination.

Anglicanism in Hong Kong began after the 1842 Treaty of Nanjing, with Revd Vincent Stanton as the first chaplain. St Stephen’s, the first Chinese church, was founded in 1865, and mission work extended to Macau in 1938. After 1949, the Diocese of Hong Kong and Macau became a separate diocese from the Chinese Anglican Church.
