USPG & Belgium
The Diocese in Europe stretches from Norway to Morocco and Portugal to Russia which makes it the largest diocese in the Church of England in terms of geography. It also encompasses incredible diversity and is compelled to promote a sense of belonging together ensuring that all people are welcome.
USPG works in close collaboration with the Diocese in Europe giving particular focus to projects that support the settlement of refugees and asylum-seekers. Here’s an insight into the refugee-centred projects that USPG currently supports in Belgium.
Community Kitchen
Over the past decade Belgium has seen a significant increase in the number of homeless people, a significant proportion of whom are undocumented migrants. It is estimated that 90% sleep rough some or all of the time and 70% do not have enough to eat.
Holy Trinity Brussels have responded by using their facilities to distribute hot food to those in need, and by creating a safe and welcoming space for volunteers from all walks of life.
Humanitarian Corridors
Navigating Belgian bureaucracy is a big challenge, but this is made easier by the care of a friend. Humanitarian Corridors, run by the Central Committee of the Anglican Church in Belgium, provides safe routes for refugees to be received and integrated into European countries. A team in Leuven welcomes families into a warm and supportive community, helps them to register with the Flemish social service, learn the language, and return to school.
