Bangladesh

Main language spoken: Bengali

Background

Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries in the world with a population of over 170 million. It is known for its tropical monsoon climate which brings heavy rainfall, high temperatures, and humidity. Flood-prone areas in the River Ganges delta, for example, make accessing healthcare difficult. The Church of Bangladesh is aware that many issues arise from this including unemployment, poverty and malnutrition. Known for its strong interfaith relationships and extensive social services, including hospitals, schools, and social welfare initiatives, the Church’s mission is to bear witness to Christ through service and community care.

The Church of Bangladesh was founded after independence in 1971. Comprising three dioceses, it serves a diverse community of around 22,000 members, including ethnic groups like the Garo, Santal, Marma, and Chakma.

The Church of Bangladesh is also represented on our South Asia Forum which brings together church partners across Southern Asia, as well as other mission agencies and link dioceses. This fellowship is committed to playing their part in God’s mission across the region.

Anti-Human Trafficking

The Church has been witness to the devastation and pain caused by the flesh trade along the border between Bangladesh and North India. It has responded by raising awareness amongst the congregations, building partnerships, enhancing the capacity of frontline responders, advocating for stronger policies, and leveraging technology for victim identification and investigations.
