Heads of the Anglican Province of Mozambique and Angola Gather for Leadership Retreat

Bishops, provincial staff and clergy from the Igreja Anglicana de Moçambique e Angola (IAMA), the Anglican Communion’s newest Province, gathered in Nairobi, Kenya, from 24–29 May 2026 for a leadership and fellowship retreat focused on renewal, learning and strategic planning facilitated by USPG.
The retreat, attended by the Most Revd Vicente Msosa, Primate and Archbishop of the Igreja Anglicana de Moçambique e Angola too, offered space to reflect on the opportunities and challenges facing the Province, while also exploring key themes including governance, stewardship, and unity.

Translation enabled full participation from the Lusophone Province. Pictured: the Rt Revd Filomena das Neves Teta Estevão, first female bishop in the Anglican Church of Mozambique and Angola and diocesan bishop of the Bom Pastor Diocese, Luanda.
The programme also included bishops’ spouses, who participated in sessions on leadership and conflict resolution, recognising the important role families play in supporting church leadership and ministry.

For many years, USPG has invested in leadership and mission across Africa, supporting theological education, health, gender justice, climate justice and education initiatives, and accompanying churches through periods of change. Senior Regional Manager for Africa, Fran Mate, adds:
This retreat built on that foundation, ensuring that IAMA benefits from lessons learned across the continent and the wider Anglican family.
Through worship, fellowship and shared learning, participants strengthened relationships across the Province and developed plans to support future growth and mission, returning to their dioceses with renewed vision and a deeper sense of shared purpose as IAMA continues to develop following its establishment in 2021.
The outcomes, strategic conversations and strengthened unity are practical steps toward sustainable growth. USPG accompanies IAMA because it believes in the resilience of its leaders, the faith of its congregations, and the transforming power of fellowship.
