Roedd y diweddar Archesgob Desmond Tutu yn ffrind annwyl i USPG ac yn gynghreiriad mawr wrth geisio cyfiawnder. Roedd yn ysbrydoliaeth i aelodau o deulu USPG ar draws yr eglwys fyd-eang. Roedd yr Archesgob Desmond hefyd yn Is-lywydd Anrhydeddus USPG ac roedd yn adnabod rhai o’n haelodau staff yn bersonol. Isod, mae tri ohonynt yn rhannu eu hatgofion am ddyn anghyffredin y mae ei farwolaeth dros y Nadolig wedi dod \u00e2 theyrngedau o bob cwr o’r byd. Duncan Dormor, Ysgrifennydd Cyffredinol USPG, yn rhannu ei atgofion am y diweddar archesgob. ‘Cefais y fraint fawr o gyfarfod \u00e2’r Archesgob Desmond ar gwpl o achlysuron. Yn gyntaf, daeth i’r coleg diwinyddol lle cefais fy hyfforddi. Aeth i mewn i’r ddarlithfa lawn ac roedd ei eiriau agoriadol yn rhywbeth fel: ‘Ni allaf siarad yn yr ystafell hon heb fendith fy Mwalimu, fy athro, yr hoffwn wedd\u00efo drosom i gyd yn gyntaf.’ Doedden ni ddim yn gwybod beth oedd e’n siarad amdano. Ond yna daeth yn amlwg. Yng nghefn yr ystafell roedd athro wedi ymddeol o’r Testament Newydd, Christopher Evans, yna yn ei wythdegau hwyr neu ddechrau’r nawdegau, a oedd wedi dysgu Tutu yng Ngholeg y Brenin, Llundain. Roedd Christopher yn berson tawel, anesboniadwy – ond doeth a hynod ostyngedig – Cafodd ei oresgyn yn glir gan y cyfarchiad hwn ac ni allai ddweud unrhyw beth, felly lansiodd Desmond i weddi a wnaeth lawer iawn o bwysigrwydd addysgu. Roedd yn foment deimladwy a hardd iawn a oedd yn dal gostyngeiddrwydd, ffydd a chyfeillgarwch y ddau ddyn gwahanol iawn. Roedd dagrau’n llifo pan oedden nhw gyda’i gilydd wyneb yn wyneb. Mae Trisha Shannon, cyn-Gynorthwy-ydd Gweithredol USPG, hefyd yn cofio pan gyfarfu \u00e2 ‘The Arch’. “Roeddwn i’n addoli’n rheolaidd yn Eglwys Gadeiriol San Si\u00f4r yn Cape Town ar adeg pan oedd yr Archesgob Desmond yn rhedeg y Comisiwn Gwirionedd a Chymodi o’i swyddfa gerllaw. Arferai’r archesgob ddod i Gymun bore cynnar yr wythnos, yn enwedig ar ddydd Gwener. Nid oedd o reidrwydd yn llywyddu, weithiau mae’n well ganddo eistedd yn y gynulleidfa. O bryd i’w gilydd, arferai ddod i’r Eglwys Gadeiriol yn gwisgo tracwisg, ond nid oedd unrhyw gamgymeriad mai ef ydoedd! Roedden ni’n arfer ei alw’n Dad Desmond ac er nad ydw i’n credu ei fod yn gwybod fy enw, roedd e’n arfer fy ngalw i’n ‘dimples’. Unrhyw ddiwrnod arall o’r wythnos, byddai’r gynulleidfa am 7.15am tua 10 o bobl. Ar ddydd Gwener, tyfodd nifer y bobl a oedd yn bresennol oherwydd presenoldeb yr archesgob. Daeth yn chwerthinllyd, gyda llawer o ddynion camera yn troi i fyny i geisio tynnu llun ohono. Ac eto, roedd yr archesgob bob amser yn raslon iawn gyda’r bobl hyn, nad oeddent yn gwybod yn iawn beth i’w wneud mewn eglwys.
