Visitors to London are invited to two exhibitions looking at the work of the church in Angola and Mozambique
‘Images of Transformation’ features sculptures made from guns and other weapons and is running at St Paul’s Cathedral from Monday 21 June to Sunday 11 July.
The sculptures were built as part of the Swords to Ploughshares scheme, in which farming implements and other tools are given in exchange for weapons stockpiled during Mozambique’s civil war.
The scheme has taken over 700,000 weapons out of use around the world and is thought to have had a major impact on peace.
Also at the exhibition will be displays put together by USPG and ALMA (Angola London Mozambique Association). The Diocese of London has a link with Angola and Mozambique.
St Paul’s Cathedral is open every weekday from 9am to 4pm. Cathedral admission charges apply: see the St Paul’s website for opening times
A second exhibition, being co-ordinated by ALMA, is happening at St Botolph-without-Bishopsgate, also in London.
The event – part of the City of London Festival – will see the church interior transformed into a sea of brightly-coloured capulanas, the garments traditionally worn by Mozambican and Angolan women.
